The Mission of IPC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ in Memphis, calling them into a devoted community of worshiping and maturing believers and sending them out to be salt of the earth and light in the world, all to the glory of God.

On March 7, 1965, a group of God's people met together to organize a new Presbyterian church in Memphis. Many Memphis families had realized a pressing need to 'preserve and perpetuate' the historic Presbyterian profession of faith in our city.
With uncompromising allegiance to the Scriptures and in obedience to God's leading, Independent Presbyterian Church held its first Sunday morning worship service on March 14, 1965. The charter membership of 290 persons met in the Plaza Theatre on Poplar Avenue. On November 25, 1965, Independent's first Thanksgiving service was held in the little "White House" situated on their newly acquired property on Walnut Grove Road.
God caused Independent to begin to grow in faith, influence, size, and facilities. In the late 1970's in a vital ministry with college students. Meeting in the homes of Independent's members, this organic ministry attracted hundreds of University of Memphis students and those from other Mid-South schools. These students formed the core of the hundreds of young couples who came pouring into the worship services and ministries of IPC in the 1980's. Independent soon started seeing its membership grow by the hundreds
In 1993, Independent underwent a large expansion of its facilities with the addition of a new Fellowship Hall and more Sunday School classes. Yet another building expansion took place in 1995 with the addition of new administrative offices, even more Sunday School classrooms, and a gymnasium.
Through the years God has blessed Independent with spiritually strong leadership, and a ministerial staff who have been faithful to His Word. From the very beginning, generations of families and individuals have fulfilled their purpose in God's Church. He has brought through its doors a wealth of godly and committed people who through His grace and power have shared His love all over our city and world. Independent humbly desires to place itself in a position where God will use her as a leader and beacon in the cause of Christ.
